The Long Dark is a first-person survival video game produced by Hinterland Studios. In the game, you take on the role of Will Mackenzie, a bush pilot who crash-lands in the harsh Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic storm wreaks havoc. Your main goal is to survive in brutal conditions and unforgiving environment.

The game received initial financial support from the Canadian Media Fund and received further financial support through a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013. It first entered Steam Early Access in 2014 and became one of the first games in Microsoft’s Game Preview program on Xbox One in 2015. Early reviews during the alpha phase were positive, and the game was well-received, selling approximately 750,000 copies as of April 2016.
The Long Dark was officially released on August 1, 2017 on multiple platforms including PlayStation 4. Additionally, plans for a film adaptation of the game were announced in 2017 and released on Nintendo Switch in September 2020. The core challenge of the game is to survive extreme cold, scarce resources, and wildlife threats while exploring a vast, beautifully rendered wilderness .
