League of Legends (LoL) is a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game created in 2009 by Riot Games. Inspired by Warcraft III’s custom map called Defense of the Ancients, Riot aims to develop its own standalone game type. League of Legends has been free-to-play since its launch in October 2009, with revenue coming from purchasable character customization options. The game runs on Windows and macOS.
In League of Legends, two teams of five players compete in player-versus-player battles on a map. Each player controls a unique character called a “Champion” who has special abilities and play style. During matches, champions can earn experience points and gold to become stronger and purchase items to help defeat the enemy team. The main mode, Summoner’s Rift, requires teams to destroy the “Nexus,” a key structure in an enemy base.
The game was praised for its approachability, character design, and production quality. Over time, it became recognized as one of the greatest video games of all time. However, negative player behavior has been an ongoing issue despite Riot’s efforts to address the issue.
The popularity of League of Legends has spawned various tie-ins, such as music videos, comics, stories, and the animated series Arcane. League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in which players control unique characters called “champions,” each with a unique set of abilities. Gameplay unfolds from an isometric perspective. As of 2023, the game currently has over 160 champions.
Throughout the game, champions accumulate experience points (XP) by defeating enemies, thereby leveling up and enhancing their abilities. Players have the opportunity to enhance their champions by acquiring items, which can be obtained using in-game gold coins. Gold is earned passively over time or actively by destroying the opposing team’s minions, heroes, or defensive structures.
The main game mode is called Summoner’s Rift, and players can only purchase items through an exclusive store menu while their champion is inside the team’s base. It’s worth noting that progress (including levels and items) is limited to a single match and does not carry over to subsequent matches.
