You don’t need to be at the same story point to play co-op. For example, if you are in Chapter 2 and your friend is in Chapter 3, you can still join them and your progress will be saved. Later, when you return to your world and complete Chapter 2, you can skip the portion of Chapter 3 that you have already completed.
If you don’t have a full squad, you can switch characters. In two-player co-op, each player has a second character to switch to, while in three-player, the host can also switch to another character.
