10 Unannounced DC Heroes We Want To See In The DCU's Chapter One

Summary

  • The DC Universe still has to confirm the debut of several important DC characters.
  • After the DCEU’s Batgirl movie was canceled, the DCU could make Barbara Gordon an important franchise player.
  • Major characters like Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, and more are needed for the DCU’s Chapter One.

There are still many heroes who have yet to be confirmed for the new DC Universe, and some major characters need to appear before the franchise’s Chapter One is over. In January 2023, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the first projects in the DCU. The duo said that themovies and series revealed would be the first part of the DCU’s Chapter One: “Gods and Monsters.”

While DC unveiled multiple movies, series, and animated projects, many important characters from DC Comics were absent from the DCU lineup. Gunn explained that the projects revealed made up less than half of the full slate of the DCU’s Chapter One. As such, the coming months and years should see the announcement of upcoming movies and series from DC that are currently being kept a secret. Here are 10 important heroes who still need to be announced for the DCU’s Chapter One.

10 Batgirl

To Make Up For A Controversy And Set Up Multiple Teams

Close

Batgirl is one of the characters that the DCU needs to get right the most. Barbara Gordon has a lot of potential, and having her shine from the start of the new shared universe would be in DC’s best interests. Also, having the character appear in the DCU’s Chapter One can quickly correct the damage caused by a major controversy. After the DCEU’s Batgirl movie was canceled, the DCU could make Barbara Gordon an important franchise player.

Barbara can help the DCU as both Batgirl and Oracle. Since the Bat-Family is confirmed for The Brave and the Bold — the DCU’s upcoming Batman movie — there is a good chance that Barbara could appear as Batgirl in the film. Without suffering an accident, Babs could also assume her tech support Oracle identity, perhaps aiding teams like the Gotham City Sirens or the Birds of Prey, helping with world-building in the DCU.

9 Martian Manhunter

A Justice League Founding Member

Close

While some of the other characters on the list could very well lead their own projects, Martian Manhunter would be a great weapon for DC in an ensemble scenario. The character is wise, has incredible powers, and is empathetic towards others. Martian Manhunter can also form psychic links between himself and his teammates, which would be great for team missions.

As one of the founding members of the Justice League in DC Comics, Martian Manhunter needs to be in the team’s first DCU movie. That could happen towards the latter half of the DCU Chapter One projects, allowing DC to space out the new Justice League and the DCEU’s version of the team. Unlike the DCEU, which only used Martian Manhunter in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the hero should play a key role in the Justice League and the DCU from the moment he debuts.

8 John Constantine

The Possible Main Star Of The DCU’s Supernatural Side

Close

John Constantine is a must-have for the DCU. The character is charismatic, snarky, and perfectly suited to serve as the audience’s guide to the supernatural and magic corners of the new DC Universe. John Constantine might even have the perfect project for his DCU debut already set. While there is no solo movie or series yet for him, Constantine could make a cameo or appear in a supporting role in DC’s Swamp Thing movie.

Constantine is also one of the rare cases where Gunn’s DCU could bring back a past actor to the role. While Keanu Reeves will return as DC’s demonologist in Constantine 2, the Arrowverse’s Constantine actor, Matt Ryan, is the one who would be perfect for the role. Ryan was such a great fit that he has appeared in multiple projects in live-action and animation as John Constantine, which means he could make the character a fan-favorite DCU player.

Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 is reportedly in the works, and with James Gunn’s multiverse comments, the bar has been raised for the sequel.

7 Mister Miracle

He Can Bump The DCU’s World-Building

Close

Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, could help the DCU feel expansive. The character is Darkseid’s adopted son, which means his debut could set up the character who will likely become the main villain of the entire shared universe at some point. A Mister Miracle project could also serve as the entry door to the whole roster of New Gods from DC Comics, as the character’s past and present revolve around the planets of New Genesis and Apokolips.

Mister Miracle could have one of the best solo projects in the DCU’s Chapter One, given one particular writer the shared universe has locked down. DC Comics writer Tom King is part of the team charting the DCU alongside James Gunn. King, who is one of the creatives behind the DCU Green Lantern series Lanterns, wrote a seminal Mister Miracle story that, if adapted, could introduce fans to the New Gods corner of the DCU in excellent fashion.

6 Black Canary

A Key Justice League Member

Close

Black Canary was played by Jurnee Smollett in the DCEU. The character was at one point set to star in her own project after debuting in Birds of Prey, which never worked out. Now, the DCU can reboot Black Canary, making Dinah Lance an interesting addition to a couple of teams. Black Canary could be the leader of the DCU’s Birds of Prey and serve as the Justice League hero in charge of training newcomers.

In the popular animated series Young Justice, Black Canary served as the young team of heroes’ martial arts trainer and also their therapist. The DCU could use Black Canary in a similar light, making her crucial to how the universe functions in a way. With multiple Superman characters and the Bat-Family confirmed for the DCU, Black Canary could also be part of the Green Arrow family of characters, working as one of its leaders.

5 Green Arrow

A Missing DCEU Hero

Close

Stephen Amell became famous for playing Oliver Queen for almost a decade on Arrow. Before him, Justin Hartley gave life to Green Arrow in Smallville. With several seasons of TV shared between the two versions of the character, Green Arrow has become a very popular DC character in live-action. As such, it was confusing that the DCEU never chose to use him. Now, the new DCU can finally make Green Arrow part of a cinematic universe.

Despite not being one of the Justice League’s founding members in the comics, Green Arrow was the first character to be added to the team as it began to expand. As such, Green Arrow has a long history with the team, and Oliver Queen’s fun antics and dynamics with characters like Hal Jordan and Batman would be perfect for the DCU’s Justice League. Green Arrow also makes for the perfect candidate to lead a DCU series.

4 Aquaman

A New Take On The Character

Close

While Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was the best hero of the DCEU box office-wise, with the character becoming a popular name, he was far from what the hero normally is like in the comics. Aquaman is usually more regal and controlled than Momoa’s wild, more comedic take on the hero. With Momoa rumored to trade in the trident for the role of Lobo in the DCU, a comic book-accurate Aquaman could rise.

The DCEU got a major thing right, which was to update the character who had become a joke after the Super Friends cartoon. The DCU’s Chapter One could include a new Aquaman solo movie that brings the hero’s classic look to life while also making sure that he is not a joke. Aquaman can be both regal and a hardened fighter. The character helps the DCU’s world-building with his control of the Seven Seas.

3 The Flash

Barry Allen And Wally West Should Play Major DCU Roles

Close

The best way to ensure that the new DCU version of the Flash escapes the bad numbers of the character’s solo movie from the DCEU and its star’s controversies is to not only recast Barry Allen but also add Wally West to the DCU. Barry Allen could be played by an older star, serving in a mentor role to Wally, the DCU’s main Flash, like in the comics at the moment.

After returning in DC Comics’ Rebirth, Wally West has shown why he is many people’s favorite Flash. The DCU has the right pieces to introduce the character and his friends, as Wally’s past as a member of the Teen Titans could be explored in the team’s upcoming movie. Both versions of the Flash can be part of team projects like the Justice League and Teen Titans franchises, while one of them leads the solo Flash movie franchise.

2 Wonder Woman

Confirmed For The DCU’s Start

Close

So far, the DCU’s Chapter One has a Wonder Woman prequel series, Paradise Lost, but no project for Diana Prince herself. While the DCU focuses on establishing the island of Themyscira and the history of the Amazons in the franchise, James Gunn has at least confirmed that Wonder Woman will appear before the first three years of the DCU have ended. Judging by the number of projects announced and still to be revealed, Wonder Woman should debut comfortably in Chapter One.

With Gal Gadot out as Wonder Woman, a new actress could be cast to star as Diana in a solo film before the Justice League comes together. As she is such an important hero, Diana should have her new status quo established before the likely team movie. The DCU’s Wonder Woman could be linked to her Greek heritage, something the DCEU barely used.

1 Nightwing

The DCU’s Secret Weapon

Close

Finally, Nightwing is one of the best characters DC has waiting to debut in the DCU. Dick Grayson is currently the leader of DC Comics’ premiere superhero team, the Titans, taking over the place of the Justice League. After his last film appearance was in the failed Batman & Robin, Dick deserves a shot at redemption. With the Bat-Family confirmed for Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie, Nightwing is a very likely character to make an appearance.

James Gunn has teased Nightwing on social media, and there are certain actors who could do Dick Grayson right in the DCU Batman reboot movie and more.

With Damian Wayne as Batman’s Robin in the DCU, Dick Grayson can thrive as his own hero, protecting Blüdhaven as Nightwing. The character had a movie stuck in development hell for years, so the DCU could finally give Nightwing a solo film. As a young hero who is one of the most charismatic and beloved characters of DC Comics, Nightwing could be for the DCU what Spider-Man is for the MCU, becoming one of the faces of the franchise.

Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman.
